Affordances are visual cues that offer guidance as to how you might use something. This concept is discussed in detail in the book {b} The Design of Everyday Things by @Don Norman

An example of an affordance the way a button is designed.

A button can be styled in such a way as to indicate it can be clicked on.

Things like drop-shadows, hover effects etc. add to this.
